Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe

Last week, I attended Central Park’s Summerstage in which the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe moved uptown for the night.

Miguel Algarin, founder of the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, was present. He was accompanied by amazing performances by La Bruja, Vanessa Hidary, Mariposa, Tahani Salah, and Edwin Torres. Additionally, hosts of the Friday Night Slam and Wednesday Night Open Mic, Mahogany L. Browne and Jive Poetic, performed as well, respectively.

The night was filled with creative and electric energy.

When I was in college, I attended the Friday Night Slam all the time. I was there so often, that I recognized regular poets and patrons. Then I stopped. But after attending Summerstage, I cannot wait to make the time and go down to the Lower East Side and listen to some amazing slam poetry. I also want to eventually perform, but that’s further down the future.

I don’t know if it’s this theme of writing the truth in my work or being open to all kinds of art, but I feel freer and excited to create. I hope the truth shows in my writing.
